Early Bridge Diagnostic System

Continuous diagnostics for aging bridges, between inspections.

Aging bridges are deteriorating faster than inspection cycles can catch. SILLAN gives infrastructure owners scalable, ongoing visibility into structural condition so maintenance and repairs can be prioritised before problems become expensive.

Stage

Research & prototyping with relevant partners in Finland

Domain

Structural health monitoring

For

Infrastructure owners, public agencies, built-environment partners

01The problem

Inspection cycles can't keep up with how infrastructure ages.

Owners are left with limited visibility between inspections, making it hard to act on early warning signs and harder still to prioritise maintenance budgets with confidence.

Infrequent

Manual inspections happen on multi-year cycles.

Costly

Traditional monitoring is hard to deploy at network scale.

Reactive

Issues are often found after they've already grown.

02Approach

Continuous signal, structural insight.

SILLAN turns ongoing measurements of a bridge's behaviour into interpretable diagnostics — surfacing early indicators of change long before they become visible in scheduled inspections.

  1. Sense
Lightweight, scalable instrumentation captures structural response.
  2. Process
Signals are continuously analysed for changes in behaviour.
  3. Diagnose
Anomalies are classified against expected structural patterns.
  4. Prioritise
Findings feed into maintenance and inspection planning.
03Project & contact

Researching and developing bridge monitoring for real-world adoption.

SILLAN is a Research to Business project from Aalto University currently being developed through Aalto Innovation Services and Aalto Startup Center R2B Pre-Business Generator. The project brings together research, commercialization, and industry validation to advance a scalable approach to bridge monitoring toward market adoption.
